Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games The Commonwealth Games are coming to the Archdiocese of Birmingham! The Games will be staged at venues across our Archdiocese area from Thursday 28 July to Monday 8 August. Hundreds of thousands of people will be heading to our region this summer and we extend a very warm welcome to all. To assist those who wish to visit a Catholic church during their time in the area we have listed below all the Catholic churches within the vicinity of the region's Commonwealth Games venues. All of these churches anticipate a possible increase in visitor numbers and are ready to greet all and extend the hand of friendship. Many of our Diocesan schools are also looking at how they can share the Commonwealth Games theme on their sports days and other events. The Games also present a wonderful opportunity for parishes to host an event, for example an outdoor picnic, to bring people back together after a difficult few years. They are coordinating 336 hours of prayer and worship with outreach for the duration of the Commonwealth Games. What you may not know is that this highly innovative partnership with the four local authorities, schools, GP surgeries and others, has actually been initiated by churches or all denominations working together. Although not overtly religious, there is something of seizing the moment of the Commonwealth Games in the Midlands this summer as well as the national events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
