A training invitation is being issued to all Parishes to ensure data protection breaches can be avoided.

Debbie Jones, Diocesan Data Compliance Manager, is running a series of training sessions from late September through to November (12 dates to choose from).

These are short online sessions (30/45 minutes) and offer a short introduction / refresher on GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

GDPR places data protection obligations on organisations and provides rights for individuals to allow them more control over their own personal data. It applies to all organisations (including charities) who hold people’s personal information and so applies to each parish and the Archdiocese.

GDPR Compliance for Parishes

Keeping the personal data that we handle in parishes is an important part of what we do and to help us, it is good to be reminded of how we can work safely. Ideally, we would like all parishes in the Archdiocese to ensure that at least one person representing the parish has attended a GDPR training session. Sessions are online, short introduction/refresher sessions which cover how to work safely and how we can all do simple things to keep personal data safe and avoid data breaches.

The most common data breach at the Archdiocese is a mis-sent email

This could be sending an email to the wrong person, not using the blind carbon copy (bcc) feature resulting in sending emails to people who do not know each other and therefore sharing email addresses with recipients.

These are simple mistakes that any of us can make, but they put us at a huge risk of a fine, or a public reprimand from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). This is why we are offering these sessions, to remind you how to work safely and avoid a data breach.

GDPR Parish Resources

We have also made some changes to the GDPR resources section on the diocesan website. Please view the general guidance and useful forms for your parish. They will help keep you on the right side of the law and avoid data protection breaches.
